“KRP Fest 2021” organized by Kyoto Research Park will be held in July 2021

Welcome to the “KRP 2021”, an interdisciplinary festival in Kyoto, Japan from July 2nd to 31st 2021.

Kyoto Research Park is a large-scale innovation facility and a gathering spot for over 500 organizations and 6,400 people.

“KRP WEEK” has been held every year from 2011 to 2019 as an event related to the corporate initiatives, services, and technologies of the companies associated with the KPR field of expertise.

This year, which marks the 10th anniversary, “KRP Fest 2021” will be held as a set of 30+ events including symposiums, seminars, and hackathons, as well as workshops for elementary and middle school students.

Being held in an online-only format last year, in 2021 festival is scheduled to be presented as a hybrid, both online and in-person.

In addition to one of the festival highlights – “HVC Kyoto 2021-Healthcare Venture Conference”, the Japan’s largest English pitch event focusing on health care and introducing well-experienced business keynote speakers and pitches from aspiring venture companies / entrepreneurial researchers in the field, a number of other various projects are planned, including “Study Abroad Caravan 2021 in Kyoto” which supports junior high school students, high school students, and graduates in their career choices.

Asahikawa Design Week 2021 to be held in June and September

Originally set for June 16th to 20th, The Asahikawa Design Week 2021 is a gathering of interior design professionals and architects from around the country that will be held on a staggered schedule due to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. This news was announced by the Executive Committee.

The new exhibition period will be divided between June and September, with the June period running from 16th to 20th as per the original schedule, and will include the “International Furniture Design Competition Asahikawa Award Ceremony” and a number of online lectures such as the “ADW Debate” in which architect Kengo Kuma, world-renowned designer Toshiyuki Kita, and Chiaki Hayashi, who is involved in various design projects, will discuss the theme of “Designing a Sustainable Future”.

For 5 days in September, from the 15th to the 19th the “Asahikawa Food Design Exhibition” “Open Factory”, and the CityCampus “SDGs x DESIGN x Shopping Park” are scheduled to be held, among other activities.

Asahikawa Design Week (ADW) is an event held with the aim of combining the potential of nature and people of the northern land through the power of design, for a more sustainable society.

In the past, the exhibition was focused on Asahikawa furniture only, but in recent years, it collaborated with a wide variety of industries not just limited to furniture or woodworking, and this year the ADW’s 6th edition will be joined by representatives of 48 various organizations.

SHOEI START EXPO 2021 “New Possibilities, New Connections” by Shoei Bijutsu Bay Studio

The exhibition and event industry is facing new challenges such as countermeasures against infectious diseases, the importance of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), in addition to the traditional industry issues such as shortage of human resources and short set-up and disassemble times. Shoei Bijutsu is trying to face these challenges with its own unique strategy. More than 1,000 people from within and outside the industry attended the preview event “SHOEI START EXPO 2021” held from April 5th to 16th at SHOEI Bay Studio in Ichikawa City, Chiba Prefecture, and the company’s activities are attracting attention.

This is a report of the preview day.

Extra-Large Fabric Wall Booth

New business and initiatives have been proposed in accordance with the New-Era values and social responsibility required of future companies: 1) Sustainable Partner, 2) On/Off Hybrid Marketing Solutions, 3) Display solutions for future space utilization.
At first, visitors were greeted with the overwhelming impact of a large graphic booth titled “Whale of Hope” using a single sheet of tension fabric (5m high, 15m wide).
The company has separate departments for each technology, such as signage, framing, lighting, and construction, but since all the engineers are gathered in the Bay Studio, large-scale development can be carried out in one place.
The 200-inch monitor in the front of the room showed a video of the booth being built by a small number of people in a quick and efficient manner.

Since its establishment as a woodworking factory, Shoei Bijutsu has been engaged in the 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) for scrap wood from production, which used to be thrown away, and for building materials that were discarded when the site was removed.
This concern for the environment has led to today’s proactive activities for the SDGs.
This time, an exhibited booth was made by assembling woodworking unit parts, where all those units were previously used in other events and exhibitions.
The project was born out of a feeling of “wastefulness” when it comes to building structures that are all destroyed when they are removed, and now the large-sized site of the Bay Studio is used for stocking and maintenance of those parts.
In the past, it has been suggested that reused products should be provided at a discount price since they were not popular, but recently, as companies are placing more importance on their commitment to the SDGs, more of them asking specifically for reused equipment.
“Shoei Bijutsu has set its own ES (Event Sustainability) goal as a target related to No.7 to No.13 of SDGs. We have also obtained ISO 20121 certification to ensure that our activities are easily understood by our customers and beyond.”, said Vice President Hayama Hiroyuki.
Each department sets specific numerical targets for improvement and has achieved such things as eliminating stretch film (reducing the amount of plastic used) by improving trolleys, reusing waste materials (reducing wood waste), and reducing the number of trucks used for transportation through operation management.
As a company that integrates production and sales, Shoei Bijutsu’s strength lies in its ability to work with an awareness of sustainability in every step of the event process, from the planning stage to design, construction, operation, and removal.
“We are always open to new ideas from all employees to achieve our goals,” added Hayama Hiroyuki.

Object Booth

One of in-house space designers proposed a space called “Spiral to the Future”.
The object required a highly complex 3D woodworking construction technique, which was completed through collaboration between experienced and young employees.

As an answer to the issue of the shortage of human resources, Shoei Bijutsu implemented the concept of passing on the knowledge from the skilled to the young and training the next generation of craftsmen.
It shows the company’s high technological capabilities.

Examples of Interior Construction

The interior design examples and commercial products were introduced in four different scenes, including public facilities and stores. Seeing the various applications of tension fabric, it was easy to realize its versatility and potential.

Building No. 1
Rental Products, Lighting, and Audio-Visual Equipment

The first through third floors are used for storage and quality control of rental products, lighting, and audio-visual equipment. The company owns 150,000 items of 1,500 types, including equipment for online events, tents and benches for outdoor events, and special equipment such as Japanese umbrellas and folding screens, as the number of online streaming events held in the Bay Studio showroom is rapidly increasing.

Woodwork Production and Installation Department

In order to improve work efficiency, equipment and materials are thoroughly organized in compartments, and the work area is designed to let in more light from outside, creating a comfortable working environment for employees.
Sawdust is cleaned with a special vacuum cleaner to maintain the cleanliness of the factory.
The shortage of installation craftsmen in the exhibition industry remains a serious problem so the company has set up its own specialized training department.
In order to ensure that even new employees and part-time staff can learn specialized work efficiently, all tasks are manualized, and the latest tools are available. The manualization of work is not limited to the woodworking and installation sections only but is implemented across all departments, and all manuals were shown to the public at the preview.

Unit Components Storage

The storage shelves are movable from side to side, and the aisles are made into a single-aisle to make effective use of the warehouse area. For safety purposes, the forklift trucks are equipped with cameras that allow them to see the top of the piles. Currently, a system using color codes and wearable cameras is being developed in cooperation with partner companies and universities as a new measure to prevent the misplacement of materials.

Better trucks

Improved trucks have been showcased as well.
In order to complete the construction within the limited set-up time for exhibitions and events, the company completes the structures in advance and then brings them to the venue, but in the past, there were no trucks that could carry structures of about 2.7 meters, the height of a typical booth.
In response to this, the company improved its trucks and equipped them with a mechanism that allows the height of each container to be adjusted.
This has made it possible to transport the finished products directly to the site, shortening the construction time and solving the problem of manpower shortage while maintaining the quality.

Display & Sign Center

With its extensive production system, the center has a full range of equipment for signage, including large cutting and acrylic processing machines.
The latest equipment that can print directly on thick materials, and a new initiative interiors and display shelves assembled by printing on environmentally friendly and highly workable paper material boards has been exhibited as well.

Hybrid Marketing Introduction Booth

Under the title of “Seed Exhibition,” a presentation on hybrid marketing through the fusion of offline and online was held introducing a new DX solution for the Corona Era.

The Bay Studio consisted of five buildings, and all areas were well organized with 5S (整理(Seiri) – Organization, 整頓(Seiton) – Order, 清掃(Seiso) – Cleanliness, 清潔(Seiketsu) – Tidiness, and 躾(Shitsuke) – Discipline).
Many of the participants, who had imagined a typical factory or warehouse, were surprised by the scale and cleanliness of Bay Studio, the specific actions taken to achieve the SDGs goals, and the business management system including quality control and human resource development.

Despite the challenges brought by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Shoei Bijutsu’s future growth is definitely going to be an exciting journey and a successful platform for the new challenges.

Sustainable Beauty Festival “My Organic Friends Fes by Salon de LA CARPE 2021″

On July 9th, 2021 LA CARPE will hold the “My Organic Friends Fes by Salon de LA CARPE 2021” in Harajuku (Omotesando), Tokyo.

With focus on supporting a natural and organic beauty lifestyle, this exhibition will be held in a hybrid format both in-person and online simultaneously. A total of 67 brands are expected to join, showcasing their products ranging from cosmetics to food.

The theme of this year’s event is “Smile”. A meeting place will be created in both real and digital format for people to “Think”, “Learn”, and “Know” about natural and organic beauty and lifestyle.

Representatives of 12 brands are expected to take the stage and talk about an awareness of sustainable business development and behavior. A planned program will allow you to collect the latest information about trends in organic cosmetics, food products, and brands.
All seminars will also be available online at the same time.

After the event, a limited time pop-up shop is planned to be set at Isetan Shinjuku in July, where carefully selected top 15 brands will be made available for purchase.

THE ART OF DC – THE DAWN OF SUPER HEROES

From June 25th to September 5th 2021, Tokyo City View located on the 52nd floor of the Roppongi Hills Mori Tower will be hosting The Art of DC: The Dawn of Superheroes exhibition in cooperation with Warner Bros. Consumer Products.

With a spectacular view of the city center, this exhibition is divided into several areas: Batman, Suicide Squad, Superman, Wonder Woman, and Justice League and will feature over 400 valuable items including symbolic vehicles of Batman the Batmobile Tumbler and Batpod as well as rare comics, costumes and props from the movies.
The exhibition unravels the more than 80 years of DC’s history as the company continues to create its original characters.

Early-bird tickets are on sale at 12:00 on May 21st (Fri.).
In addition to the “DC Catalog Ticket,” a special ticket with limited-edition original goods that can not be obtained elsewhere, and the “DC Premium Passport” in a bat shape with an original number that allows you to visit the exhibition as many times as you want, several types of discount tickets with original designs are available as well.

Inter BEE 2021 The Business Exhibition for Audio, Video and Communications is now accepting applications for its November show.

The Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association (JEITA) will hold the comprehensive media event “Inter BEE 2021” at Makuhari Messe (Mihama-ku, Chiba City) for three days from November 17th to 19th 2021.
The exhibition is one of the largest media events in Japan, bringing together professionals in pro audio, video, broadcasting, communications, professional writing, and distribution, as well as technicians, creators, and stakeholders in the video and media industries.
This year’s exhibition will mark its 57th year and is poised to provide a media and entertainment business space that encompasses all aspects of content creation, delivery, and reception.
Last time, the event was held online and attracted 21,056 viewers, but due to the great demand for face-to-face experience of equipment, services, and communication with users, the decision was made to hold the Inter BEE 2021 in a hybrid format.
In addition, the event will be held concurrently with Digital Content Expo (organized by Digital Content Association of Japan) with the aim of promoting the use of advanced content technology in the media and entertainment fields.
The first deadline for applications is May 31, and the second deadline for applications is June 30.

DESIGNART TOKYO 2021

This hybrid event is scheduled to be held this autumn from October 22nd to 31st throughout the most famous areas of the city: Omotesando, Gaienmae, Harajuku, Meijingumae, Shibuya, Ebisu, Daikanyama, Nakameguro, Roppongi, Ginza, as well as online.

DESIGNART TOKYO brings together and presents a variety of exhibits across all genres of art, design, architecture and interior design, fashion, food, sports, and technology from all over the world.
The theme this year is “CHANCE! – Unprecedented Opportunity” supporting the idea of discovering and encouraging young designers and artists.

One of the highlights is a new concept outdoor furniture series created by Taiwanese architect Johnny Chiu, the founder of J.C. Architecture (JCA), and the Japanese group Kobe Leather known for its contribution to the sustainable development of Kobe city. The first product in the series – single chair – will be displayed for the first time.

Another remarkable name – De Castelli, the hot topic at the Milano Salone, has already arrived in Japan this February. The company with 4 generations-long history will exhibit metal furniture made of iron, brass, and copper, in their variety of shapes and finishes.

DESIGNART TOKYO agenda also includes a number of sustainability-related content and collaborations.

Last year, while events all over the world faced changes in schedules or cancellations amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, the DESIGNART with a number of implemented strict infection control measures was still taken place and attracted a total of 140,000 visitors and had an online reach of about 850,000.

Fuji Rock Festival 2021

Fuji Rock Festival will be held from August 20th to 22nd, 2021 at the Naeba Ski Resort in Yuzawa-machi, Niigata Prefecture, according to the Fuji Rock Festival Secretariat announcement.
Due to the international travel restrictions imposed by COVID-19, one of Japan’s largest outdoor music events will be limited to domestic artists only.
The aim is to create a “special edition” Fuji Rock that can be enjoyed safely even during the Corona era.

Tickets go on sale starting mid-April.
*Tickets purchased for the 2020 Fuji Rock Festival are valid for this year’s event.

New size exhibition booth introduced by IFFT/Interior Lifestyle Living Expo

From October 18th to 20th, 2021 the 13th IFFT/Interior Lifestyle Living at Tokyo Big Sight will be held by the Japan Furniture Industry Development Association (JFA) and Messe Frankfurt Japan.

IFFT/Interior Lifestyle Living is an international trade fair that brings together interior design-related products. 352 companies from 14 countries and regions exhibited at IFFT/Interior Lifestyle Living in 2019, attracting 16,016 visitors from 34 countries and regions.

This year’s event will feature a new “Ethical” zone with a focus on sustainability and ecology, environmental protection, up-cycling, fair trade, products that support people with disabilities, organic products, local production for local consumption, and more.

In response to requests from exhibitors showcasing smaller items, a new size of booth space has been introduced. The new space is smaller than the existing 9㎡booths and is measured only 6.3㎡ (3×2.1m)

The deadline for applications is June 11th, 2021.
The unit price is 456,000 yen (tax included) for a single 9㎡ booth and 348,000 yen (tax included) for a single 6.3㎡ booth.
