\"image001<\/a>National Glass Centre, part of UniSpace Sunderland, has received a significant funding boost to its redevelopment programme after being awarded \u00a3100,000 from the Sir James Knott Trust.<\/p>\n

The investment will contribute towards the ambitious transformation currently taking place at National Glass Centre, which is planned to re-open to the public on 29th June 2013, and will see major improvements to the Centre\u2019s event spaces, including the gallery and learning spaces. It will also assist with covering the cost of the addition of new electric furnaces in the integrated Hot Glass Studio, a facility that is often used for incentives during events held at National Glass Centre. This will improve environmental sustainability and significantly reduce its carbon footprint.<\/p>\n

More than \u00a32 million has already been invested in National Glass Centre\u2019s redevelopment following a successful fundraising campaign attracting contributions from Arts Council England, Heritage Lottery Fund and the Foyle Foundation as well as significant investment from the University of Sunderland.<\/p>\n

James Bustard, Director of National Glass Centre, said: \u201cWe are delighted that the Sir James Knott Trust has made such a generous donation to National Glass Centre, recognising its great potential by significantly investing in its future.
\n\u201cThis investment strengthens further the commitment made by our partners at Arts Council England, Heritage Lottery Fund and Foyle Foundation. The redevelopment also reinforces the Centre\u2019s reputation for excellence and enables us to play a major role in the growing cultural landscape of Sunderland as well as celebrate the City\u2019s rich glass-making heritage.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sharon Olver, Commercial Services Manager at UniSpace Sunderland, commented: \u201cNational Glass Centre is truly unique and we are delighted that this extra funding will enhance the venue as a leading cultural events space. The funding will also reduce the carbon footprint of the Centre, an issue that we at UniSpace are very passionate about.
\n\u201cWe already have a number of bookings confirmed for the newly developed space and look forward to continuing to host national and international events at what will be a cultural venue of international standing.\u201d<\/p>\n

National Glass Centre\u2019s opening weekend will take place on 29 \u2013 30th June 2013, with a weekend of special events and opening of three exhibitions of national significance.\n<\/p>\n
