Every year, POP publishes a list of newly launched exhibitions and trade fairs in its \u201cTrade Fair and Exhibition News\u201d magazine. This year, in its issue dated January 15th, the magazine published a list of 68 new exhibitions scheduled to be held in 2022. A questionnaire survey was conducted in November 2021 for organizers, exhibition venues, and related organizations and companies. According to the results, the number of exhibitions scheduled to be held in 2022 (excluding corporate private shows and sales events) is 861.<\/p>\n

This list of new exhibitions has been published since 2014 and is now in its ninth year. This report analyzes the launch of new exhibitions for the six-year period from 2017 to 2022 based on the published data. Below is the analysis of the number of exhibitions held, as well as by industry sectors, by venues, by exhibirion organizers and by regions.<\/p>\n

1) New Exhibitions
\n<\/strong>The total number of new exhibitions held (or to be held) in the course of nine years from 2014 to 2022 is 446. Starting with 22 fairs in 2014, 40s in 2015 and 2016, and 50s from 2017 until 2020. The 2020 survey was released on January 15, before the spread of the COVID-19 infection. 2021 survey revealed 57 fairs, and 68 in 2022, showing an increase of about 20%. Even in the midst of the pandemic, I could feel the enthusiasm of the exhibition organizers to overcome this crisis.<\/p>\n

2\uff09By Industry Sectors
\n<\/strong>The January issue of the magazine presents the following information on the most popular industry sectors for the exhibitions. As a result of the analysis based on 822 questionnaire responses, the most popular industries were IT\/information processing, Office equipment and environment\/energy, Manufacturing\/design\/control equipment as capital goods. As consumer goods, Food & beverage, Beauty and health, and Hospitals and medical care. Although there have been no major changes in popular industries compared with previous years, a growing interest in the health and medical fields, as well as products and services supporting telework, can definitely be seen.<\/p>\n

\u25c6New Industries in 2022
\n<\/strong>Now let’s take a look at the industries of the new exhibitions in 2022. I would like to point out that classification of industries is a challenging task. There are many new exhibitions that cover multiple industries, making it difficult to make an accurate judgment about which industry to classify them into. Chart 2 below shows the author’s own classification of new exhibition industries from 2017 to 2022.<\/p>\n

This shows that the industries covered are almost the same as the popular industries pointed out by the aforementioned Trade Fair Exhibition News. All of these industries cover high-tech fields, fields that reflect the pandemic, health-conscious fields, fields that are becoming popular and trendy, fields that address the needs of the aging population, and fields that have strong roots in the food and restaurant industries.<\/p>\n

3) By Venues
\n<\/strong>Next, let’s take a look at the exhibition halls below in 2022:<\/p>\n

No.1 Tokyo Big Sight – 43 fairs, 63.2%
\nNo. 2 INTEX Osaka – 10 fairs, 14.7%
\nNo. 3 Portmesse Nagoya, Makuhari Messe – 3 fairs, 4.4%
\nNo.5 Aichi Sky Expo, Marine Messe Fukuoka, TRC Exhibition Hall, ATC Hall – 2 fairs, 2.9%<\/p>\n

Tokyo Big Sight is now able to fully use all its grounds since the Olympics games were finished.<\/p>\n

If we look at the six-year period from 2017 to 2022, the ranking is as shown in Chart 4 below:

Since this is a ranking of venues only for new exhibitions, not for exhibitions as a whole, it may not necessarily reflect the trend of the entire exhibition industry, but some interesting things can be pointed out.<\/p>\n

In last year’s report, I made the following points. The top four exhibition venues, Tokyo Big Sight, INTEX Osaka, Makuhari Messe and Portmesse Nagoya, already have a strong presence as venues of new exhibitions.
\nWith Tokyo Big Sight was being used as an International Broadcast Center and Media Center for the Olympics, many events were moved to Makuhari Messe, INTEX Osaka, and Pormesse Nagoya.<\/p>\n

This year was different. Tokyo Big Sight is beginning to dominate as a venue for new exhibitions, accounting for 43 out of the total 68, and 64% of the total. Even the second largest, INTEX Osaka, had only 10 fairs and 15% of the total. Before the Olympics, from 2018 to 2021, all four exhibition sites – Tokyo Big Sight, Makuhari Messe, INTEX Osaka, and Port Messe Nagoya – were in competition. The number of exhibitions held in Osaka has also increased due to the temporary unavailability of Tokyo Big Sight and Makuhari Messe. Now that the Olympics are over, Tokyo Big Sight has a total of 115,420 square meters in the East, West, and South halls, far surpassing second-place holders Makuhari Messe and INTEX Osaka. Considering that the events are to be held continuously, INTEX Osaka will continue at the current pace, but other exhibition halls might have hard time in the future.<\/p>\n

\n4\uff09By Exhibition Organizers
\n<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>As shown in chart 4, RX JAPAN (formerly Reed Exhibitions) has consistently maintained the absolute top position since the data was first published, accounting for 41.1% of the total with 30 exhibitions in 2022.<\/p>\n

Over the six-year period 2017-2022, we see:
\nRX Japan – 181 (54.5%)
\nJapan Management Association (JMA) – 33 (9.9%)
\nBoutiques, Inc. – 20 (6.0%)
\nInnovent, Inc. – 15 (4.5%)
\nInforma Markets (UBM) – 12 (3.6%)
\nTSO International – 5 (1.5%)
\nJapan Food Journal Co., Ltd. – 5 (1.5%)<\/p>\n

In recent years, there have been a number of cases where the name of the organizer is unclear, but in such cases, in addition to the organizing committee, the company in charge of the administrative office is counted as the organizer.<\/p>\n

In 2019, Japan Management Association (JMA) launched 16 new exhibitions, but since then the number dropped down to 4 – 6. In 2022, some organizers are taking on the new challenges. Those are Boutiques, Inc., Innovent, Inc., and TSO International. Boutiques, Inc. launched 11 projects, and Innovent, Inc. and TSO International each launched 5 projects. (See Chart 5)<\/p>\n

Exhibition organizers can be categorized as follows:<\/p>\n

1) Organizers that specialize in exhibitions and deal with multiple industries:
\n*RX Japan, Informa Markets, Messe Frankfurt Japan Ltd., EJK Japan, Ltd (Foreign capital)
\n*Innovent,Inc., TSO International (Domestic capital)
\n2) Organizers who specialize in exhibitions and deal with specific industries:
\n* Business Guide-sha,Inc (gift), Boutiques, Inc. (care related), etc.
\n3) Companies for which exhibitions are not a specialized business, but are an important activity and who handle a variety of industries:
\n*Japan Management Association (JMA)
\n4) Companies for which exhibitions are not a specialized business, but are an important activity and who deal with specific industries:
\n* Japan Packing Institute, National Supermarket Association of Japan etc.
\n5) Companies whose main business is not to hold exhibitions but to conduct business in this sector:
\n*Mass media: Nikkei Shinbun, Nikkei Business Publications, Inc., Nikkan Kogyo Shimbun, Ltd. , FujiSankei Business i. (multiple industries), Japan Food Journal Co.,Ltd. (specific industry), etc.
\n*Industrial associations, etc. (generally dealing with specific industries)
\n* JTB Communication Design, Inc. (handling multiple industries), etc<\/p>\n

Looking at the organizers of new exhibitions, it is clear that they are mostly limited to (1), (2) and (3) of above. Organizers who specialize in exhibitions are taking on the challenge of developing new exhibitions, whether they are multi- or single industry. Competition is important for the development of the exhibition industry, and it is necessary for not only RX JAPAN but also many other organizers to work on new events. The organizers, whose main business is not exhibitions itself but a division of their business, are most affected by the Olympic and COVID issues and might not be in a position to organize new fairs, however, I would like them to consider the possibility of returning to the market. Since the holding of a new exhibition can be a barometer for the development of the exhibition industry in Japan, it is necessary for the industry to think as a whole, regardless of the nature of the exhibition organizers.<\/p>\n

5\uff09New exhibitions by regions
\n<\/strong>There are many different types of new exhibition being launched. There may be cases where a new industry exhibition is set up on a reasonable scale from the start, but the number is small due to the risk involved. In fact, there are cases where exhibitions that used to be held at Tokyo Big Sight are now held at other exhibition halls such as Makuhari Messe or INTEX Osaka, or where existing exhibitions have discovered industries that are likely to gain more popularity in the future, and new, smaller-scale exhibitions are launched with the expectation of future growth. Born small, grow big – type of exhibitions particularly popular these days. A typical example of the new type of exhibitions that start on a small scale is the “1st<\/sup> XX exhibition” taking place as a part of \u201c\uff5eWeek\u201d<\/p>\n

Let’s take a look at some noteworthy features of the new exhibitions held in the regions over the past six years, from 2017 to 2022.<\/p>\n

1\uff09In 2018, during the preparation period for the Olympic Games, the number of events reached 38, but in 2019 decreased to 27. The number then began to rise in 2020, when the Olympics are scheduled to be held, and reached 40 in 2021. However, in 2022, the year after the Olympics ended, it dropped to 23.<\/p>\n

2\uff09Between 2018 to 2021, a shift occurred with large exhibitions moving from Tokyo Big Sight to other large halls such as Makuhari Messe and Pacifico Yokohama. In particular, in 2018 and 2020, a large number of new exhibitions were held in both exhibition halls, 22 and 16 respectively.<\/p>\n

3\uff09Osaka has benefited the most from the relocation of exhibitions to outside Tokyo. For example, in 2022, 12 out of 23 local exhibitions, or 52%, will be held in Osaka, followed by 5 in Nagoya and 2 in Fukuoka.<\/p>\n

4\uff09An interesting point can be seen in Chart 6 below. In the six years from 2017 to 2022, a total of 333 (58.3%) new exhibitions were held nationwide, of which 194 \u2013 in regions including Chiba and Kanagawa. Of the 194 events, 68 were held in Osaka, accounting for 35.1%; 64 in Chiba and Kanagawa, accounting for 33.0%; and 41 in Nagoya, accounting for 21.1%, with these four locations making up for 89.2% of the total. It is understandable that the relocation to other areas, including Fukuoka, did not go as much as expected. This is from the perspective of holding new exhibitions and does not necessarily reflect the entire exhibition industry, but it will be necessary to continue to monitor the impact of the completion of the Olympics and the current availability of all facilities at Tokyo Big Sight.<\/p>\n
